What is the best finish for Kitchen cabinets for appearance and durability - Laquer or Polyurethane?

Having new custom cherry cabinets made for our kitchen remodel. One cabinet maker uses laquer finish, another uses polyurethane. We're getting conflicting reports on which one is most beautiful and durable in a very busy kitchen. Which is best?

  1. Poly is supposed to be a little stronger, but it depends on what look you want. Laquer also is strong. Here's more: http://www.thathomesite.com/forums/load/wood/msg0601561115487.html?9
  2. Technically, it makes no difference. It's the care and maintenance that will determine how long they'll look good. Abuse either one, and they fail.
