Best way to renew my kitchen cabinets?

I would like to know, what's the best way to "refresh" my kitchen's look by working on my cabinets? How many ways are there to change the look of my cabinets? Should I do some refinishing, painting, varnish? I currently have some washed maple cabinets and I would like the result to be something like a vibrant hazelnut. Please go into details as I am unfamiliar with the process. Thank you!
