How should I decorate my new bedroom? It's tiny?
We're moving to Seattle and my room in our house there is tiny. I have to get all new furniture for it because we're moving from New Zealand and we can only fit family airlooms in the cargo container. My mum said my budget will be $1500 USD. I have to buy a bed, desk, wardrobe, TV, duvet, EVERYTHING for my room for that much. Here that wouldnt get you very far at all! They said I can get more money later on in the year but thats what I'll have to work on for now. The house is near the city centre but its small. My room is tiny. It's like a little box. I have a VERY small closet so I don't know where I'm going to put stuff. I do have my own bathroom en suite! I dont know much about stores in America to get furniture except Pottery Barn. I really really like this shelve http://www.pbteen.com/products/display-it-storage-mirror/?pkey=cbookcases-shelves but its really expensive. Can you give me as much help as you can? I need to know stores to find stuff. I need decoration ideas to make my room look bigger. I want my room to be nice to. I dont know how to make it nice with a little budget. My favourite colours are blue, purple, green, and yellow. Please help! Please give links! : D

- I love Pottery Barn, but its one of the most expensive places to buy from. I would find nearby mall and go to the big department stores. It will be just as nice for less money. stores like Macys and Target.
- If it's really tiny, get a high bed so you can have your desk underneath it. Any chance of a local Ikea?
- Well first priority would be a bed of course, I would go with a twin size one. You can get your matress at Matress Express or other places that specialize in beds and stuff. We have like a little furniture shopping outlet where I live, there is a Mattress Express an American Furniture Warehouse and a couple other stores (whose names escape me) see if there is something like that where you live. Just start a budget plan. Make sure you set aside a good portion of the money towards your bed and mattress. Also Overstock.com has some really good prices on curtains. Target would be the place to go for your desk and chair, they have a lot of good dorm like furniture for cheap. Also for room accessories, I would go with Walmart. Twin sized beds run anywhere from 200$ to 1000$ just depends on the type you want. The ones at 400$ are decent beds and you can get some cute ones. A good twin-size mattress is probably around 200$. Maybe after looking at the average price of these things, you can find room leftover to paint your room with! You could probably get a bunk bed, take out the lower bunk and put a desk there. Here is a cute bed: http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=black+twin+sized+bed&oe=UTF-8&cid=11951373633619926619&sa=title#p ^^It's 283$ Plus tax and shipping, it could be a bit over 300$ Instead of having a nightstand, how about two dressers for your clothes? One on either side of your bed. Ones like these: http://www.target.com/Prepac-Drawer-Black-Lingerie-Chest/dp/B00068P2V8/ref=br_1_22?ie=UTF8&frombrowse=1&searchView=grid5&searchNodeID=3527841&node=3527841&searchRank=pmrank&searchPage=1&searchSize=30&id=Prepac%20Drawer%20Black%20Lingerie%20Chest That way you have more room for your clothes and they work as a nightstand! I wouldn't get a mattress online, I'd wait till you have your bed so you get the perfect size. Bedding sets can be found anywhere from JCPenny's, Target, Walmart, Sears. But like the mattress, I wouldn't buy bedding online, but here is a cute suggestion: http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Mod-Dots-Purple-and-Black-Bed-Scarf-Set/4186091/product.html?cid=123620&fp=F&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=12184111 Or this: http://www.amazon.com/Queen-Green-Stripes-Bedding-Comforter/dp/B0029QPN4G As for a desk, Target would be the place to look: http://www.target.com/Desks-Furniture-Dorm-Essentials/b/ref=nav_t_spc_9_icn_3_2/185-3541809-2710133?ie=UTF8&node=14176251 Also a chair : http://www.target.com/b/ref=in_br_browse-box/185-3541809-2710133?ie=UTF8&node=14167341&searchSize=&searchView=&searchRank= ^^You could also try looking at stools if you want something cheaper. Walmart and target both have bookshelves cheap, and there will defineitly be a Target and a Walmart in Seattle. http://www.target.com/s/185-3541809-2710133?_encoding=UTF8&search-alias=tgt-index&keywords=bookshelves&searchSize=30&ref=sr_bx%5F1%5F1&searchView=grid5&searchNodeID=1038576&searchPage=1&searchRank=target104545 And if you are short on storage space or want to make an improvisational bookcase I find these cute cubes in a variety of color: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=10910002 And you can get paint from Sherwin Williams. They have just about every color imagineable, and don't paint to dark a color or your room will feel very small, but curtaians will draw attention to the windows and make it feel bigger, I personally like these wierd curtains: http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Nirvano-Rod-Pocket-Curtain-Panel-55-in.-x-96-in./4155105/product.html But they have other options at that site. Here is a black bunk bed: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=10575815&sourceid=1500000000000003260370&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=10575815 And amazon.com has just about everything imagineable. And if you want to get an idea of a general price of something the google shopping tool is really great. And I wouldn't get a t.v. with your budget, it will use up a LOT of the money. Hope I helped and you liked my suggestions! Good luck with the move!
- get one of those beds where you can just flip it down and it hides behind a headboard in the wall. there was this one small desk with wheels on it from pb teen and i saw it, but my mom threw the catalouge away yesterday afternoon., and when i went back for it, it was covered in last night's chilli. or get a sofa bed, and if u have an extra room, put the desk in there
- My friend had this problem when she moved to the country! If you can paint it, paint it a light, cool colour so that it makes the room look bigger. And do you really need all of that stuff? The less you have, the better it will look. =DD Hope I helped!
- A fashion rule of thumb is to avoid horizontal stripes because they give the illusion of a fuller figure, and the same principle can be applied to interior decorating. One of the best ways to give a tiny room the appearance of being larger is to paint horizontal stripes on the walls. I think it would be beautiful to paint the colors of the ocean with a deep cerulean blue on the bottom, a pretty aquamarine in the middle, and a soft sky blue on top, but many color combinations would work. The paint strips you can find at most hardware and paint supply stores have complimentary colors on them, and can give you more ideas. Also look around at your favorite things and in nature, and draw inspiration from the colors that you are most captivated by. The key to furnishing a small room is to look for items that can serve multiple purposes, and to carefully consider what you really need. You could put a desk on one side of your bed in place of a nightstand so your lamp would serve dual purposes. If you found a desk with drawers you could allocate the top one to things you'd put in a nightstand, and use the lower ones for your supplies and other items. I prefer finding furniture at local stores rather than the big chains, but since I'm not familiar with the ones up in Seattle, I'm linking IKEA. Here's a desk possibility: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S19862763 Wall shelves above the desk could hold extra materials and save on floor space, and colorful storage boxes will make them more visually appealing. If you had space on the other side of the bed you could put a small bookcase or narrow chest of drawers, and place another lamp on top identical to the one on the desk so you have symmetry. I prefer clustering furniture together in a smaller area for a more streamlined appearance and to give you more floor space, so depending on the layout of the room I would probably put the bulk of the furniture along two facing walls to leave galley ways along the side of the bed. I would look for a four-poster bed like this one: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S89861543 and string lights all along the top frame to cast off a warm glow and make the room more inviting and whimsical. http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/00174137 You could also string colorful beads onto strands of ribbon or jewelry wire and tie them onto the bed to make up for the lack of wall space available for decorations. Hooking lanterns like this one onto the frame would be another possibility: http://www.worldmarket.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3777282 Place your bed on risers so you can fit storage boxes underneath to hold your off-season clothes and other items. You can find a long bedskirt to cover up the boxes, or just look for colorful containers so they won't be an eyesore. The shelving unit you like from BP Teen is really creative and a definite space-saver, but it will eat up a third of your budget. Since you need a wardrobe I would get one like this: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/00120601 and attach a cork board, magazine or photo collage to the front of it, and a full-length mirror on the side. Look for clever ways to save space, such as using decorative wall hooks to hold your purses, bags, and scarves, and closet organizers to stack your shoes and other items. Urban Outfitters and Bed, Bath and Beyond have some really appealing comforters and duvets, and I know both stores have locations in Seattle. http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/catalog/productdetail.jsp?itemdescription=true&itemCount=10&startValue=1&selectedProductColor=&sortby=&id=15730617&parentid=A_FURN_BEDDING&sortProperties=+subCategoryPosition,+product.marketingPriority,-product.startDate&navCount=21&navAction=poppushpush&color=&pushId=A_FURN_BEDDING&popId=APARTMENT_FURNISH&prepushId= This one would be my top pick if you painted the room with horizontal stripes because the geometric circles would play off their shape and add dimension. I just bought these pillowcases for my room, and adore them: http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/catalog/productdetail.jsp?itemdescription=true&itemCount=10&startValue=41&selectedProductColor=&sortby=&id=17672890&parentid=A_FURN_BEDDING&sortProperties=+subCategoryPosition,+product.marketingPriority,-product.startDate&navCount=84&navAction=poppushpush&color=&pushId=A_FURN_BEDDING&popId=APARTMENT_FURNISH&prepushId= They're sooo freaking cute! This is my second favorite duvet and one I think you might like as well: http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&SKU=117498 I like this one too: http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&SKU=117500 If you're really lacking in wall space, you could attach a unique tapestry or wall mural to the ceiling to add flair. http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/catalog/productdetail.jsp?id=17122292&navAction=jump&isProduct=true&parentid=MORE%20IDEAS&isProduct=true&cross-sell=true&guide-bn=true http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&SKU=15912090 Hanging a wall mirror over the bed will add depth, and if you scattered mirrors along the back wall like these http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&SKU=14446419 the reflections will bounce off each other and make the room look even bigger. I'm sorry for not getting the chance to reply to your email; this week has been chaotic and stressful, but I hope my answer is helpful. ~ Peace : )
